MUS 3.07 American Music: The Minimalist Impulse

What is minimalist music? What ideas and identities does minimalism illuminate? If less is more, what do less and more sound like and feel like? We will explore these questions. Today, minimalism is both an art-historical style and an aspirational way of life—a psychological and material ideal. In touch with the simultaneously subtle and towering presence of minimalism around us, we will open ourselves to the messages—quiet and loud—that minimalist music can carry.
